 SOCOM 4: It's Official!
Posted by Jeremy Dunham

Hello everyone, my name is Jeremy Dunham and I’m the Senior Community Manager at Zipper Interactive. I wanted to drop in and introduce myself and deliver some truly exciting news -- on behalf of everyone here at the studio, I’m pleased to announce that SOCOM 4 is indeed in development and is slated for release exclusively on PlayStation 3 this Fall.

Of course, as with any new announcement, what you really want to know are the details. Who’s in your squad? Where have they been deployed? What kind of threat are they up against? Though we’ll be revealing the answers to all these questions and plenty more throughout 2010, we don’t want to leave you completely in the dark, so what we will tell you is that a militant revolutionary has unexpectedly seized control in an important South Asian country. As the Ops Com, your mission is to command an elite five-man squad charged with stopping his aggressive agenda before it’s too late. In only six days, you must lead your team through a hostile jungle and urban environments against an army of well-armed rebel insurgents that completely outnumber you.

If that setup doesn’t whet your appetite enough, you should also pleased to know that in addition to the SOCOM’s single-player operation, players will also be able to enjoy a 32-person multiplayer mode that boasts more Special Forces units than ever before!

If you crave even more information, then the guys at IGN have you covered with their exclusive first-look preview at what we’ve shown so far. Editor and shooting game fanatic, Ryan Geddes, dropped by our studio earlier in the week to check out SOCOM 4 for himself, so be sure to read the full IGN article to find out what he thinks.

But wait! There’s more! As part of our continued announcement celebration, the folks at Game Trailers TV will air the world premiere trailer for SOCOM 4 tonight at 12:30 a.m. All you have to do is tune in to Spike TV when the time is right and let your eyes and ears do the rest. Don’t miss it!

Oh, and before we let you go, we wanted to send a message to our SOCOM and MAG fans all over the world. First, if you play MAG and wonder what this means for the game’s future, wonder no more – we’re still fully committed to supporting MAG for a long, long time and the addition of another game in our lineup doesn’t change that. Second, it's been great to hear from SOCOM fanatics located in every corner of the globe as we led into today’s announcement. We’re extremely excited to be attached to this beloved franchise again and knowing that so many people wanted us to return to something that already meant so much to us has been both inspiring and touching -- so thank you to all of you who wanted it to happen! We look forward to living up to your expectations.

You can disuss our upcoming game on the new SOCOM 4 forums here: http://forums.socom.com/socom/board?board.id=socom4.

i seen the trailer on TV ;ast night , it was dope, but it didnt show any game play so that was kinda wack

It looks liek it should had a single players mode due the the quote

as for co op - if they wanna compete w COD , they need to add Co op , they had it in the previous Socom so why not now.

Hope this all works out , zipper made a great game, their only down fall was servers and the lag , but with MAG in swing and no lag on that side i dont see them creating Socom 4 and failing, i honestly think they are gonna get it right and the game is gonna bring back that feeling again

ahh cant wait

Only exception I'll make to my 9 map rule, is if they have some hot Co-op mode like COD does.

Otherwise, they're not ripping me off again.

you forget that the company that ripped you off was Slant Six.

In any case so far they've started off with some good communication. I dont anticipate this Socom being some bullshit, the Zipper community manager answered some question in the Socom 4 forum and Socom 4 has been in hands-on development (coding, voice acting, etc.) for 3+ years. That means we should by no means be receiving an incomplete game.

I'm really optimistic, the game looks really promising. The story looks like it will be the best story mode in any Socom game, taking queue from COD and Battlefield and making a narrative similar to a high budget action flick. I hope they have a good co-op mode. I think they probably will because the last Socom Zipper made, Combined Assault, emphasized co-op.

Hopefully the online has a lot of guns and a nice map selection. 3+ years of development make me think that they'll probably include a handful of popular classic maps and a good amount of original maps too. But who knows, I could be way off.

i agree w Sav

Last socom was fun that zipper made, they had co op w summit and all that shit , its when /6 took over and ruined it.  Zippers only issue w me was servers (too many glitchers and lag) it ruined the game.

But with how Bad Company 2, MAG, and COD play, I cant see servers being a issue w Socom 4 - so im thinking Single player mode - Co Op mode - PLUS classic online play , shit should bring life back to the only 3rd person shooter alive and everyone will be right back on socom like the old Socom 2 days!

They say Fall and we all know each Socom came out 2nd week of Oct , so i looking at that time frame

I think this time around zipper is going to make SOCOM fun again . there is a few things im hoping Zipper is doing to make this SOCOM better .

1. Design the Servers for the PS3 , recreate new severs just for SOCOM like they did for MAG .
2. Forget all other SOCOMs , start from scratch on this one . No old maps , No more taking elements from SOCOM 1 threw 3 and so on . It needs to be NEW and fresh .
3. Single player and online need to work together . Meaning do what you did with the first SOCOM games , Make us want to play the single player game for some extras ( Guns , Ammo , Gillie suits and other extras ) . Make them only unlock able and not buyable .

Single Player game ...

1. needs Co-op with all characters being able to be used with fiends , if there is a team of 5 or 6 members , then you can play with 5 or 6 friends . ( one up on geas of war and other co-op games out there ) .
2. DOWNLOAD extra missions ( dont let SOCOM be online only , give the gamers more missions to play fo the single player mode . Don't wait 2 yeas to make these missions either , and let them be use with the co-op ) .

Online game Play ....

1. need to have at least 9 good maps . 3 Jungle maps 3 urban maps and 3 dessert and snow maps ..
2. forget SOCOM 1 and 2 maps , they dont need to be remade a 5 or 6 time . there old and done with , time to look forward and make thats that .
3. weapons need to be fully costume ( No more 3 attachments , need to build it to the Army of two specs , fully costume ) .

Personally i see this game being the SOCOM game to bring SOCOM back to full life , and to do this you need to take out a few things that make older games kid games .

Jumping needs to be taking out , No solider jumps around while in combat tying not to be shot , they use the objects around them to hide , or take cover and flank there enemies . Look at Army of two or gears of war , they both where great games with out jumping . tactics is what SOCOM needs .

lets hope zipper does a great job this time , i feel this is there last time to make socom big again . If they dont get it done right now there is no saving SOCOM .

AS long as the maps arent super huge with vehicles. as long as the game is fully developed ad does what the box says it does. as long as there is 10 maps WITH some forgotten maps in there i will be happy to buy this game. Hopefully they dont rush this cause if i play another incomplete game i will bomb my ps3!!!

yea i know, but 3+ years of hands-on development means they've been taking their time and giving this game the care and attention it needs. I'm not sure what to expect as far as online gameplay goes. I'm hoping the core Socom gameplay is still there, but i'm also looking forward to what kind of changes Zipper will make to help modernize the experience and really push Socom forward to make it a legitimate competitor.

I know this, if you're expecting the new Socom game to just be a visual upgrade to Socom 2 you might be disappointed. So much to look forward to! haha.

Socom 4 was just shown at the Sony Press Conference at GDC. The game looks good, the graphics are solid (though can stand to be improved, the build presented was the pre-alpha build so a lot of tweaks are to be implemented before release). Gameplay was fast and smooth, the camera angle was kinda weird. It was kinda Over-the-shoulder but kinda Classic Thirs Person, we'll see how this pans out over the course of the next few months. (I get the feeling they'll give us the option for both like Confrontation).

The main focus of the presentation was Sony's new motion control the Playstation Move. Socom is confirmed to be compatible with the Playstation Move and playing Socom with the motion controller looks kinda fun. It was also confirmed the motion controller is only an option and the Dualshock 3 is still gonna be the main way to play the game.

Also Socom will have a snap-to-cover system like a lot of modern Third Person shooters. Not quite sure how I feel about it yet though, I have to see more footage of how it will be used in multiplayer.

So there we have it, our first glimpse at Socom 4 gameplay. So far its looking interesting, the core gameplay looks very similar to older Socoms, but there are a lot of small changes that change the way we may experience the game.

EDIT:

here's a link to the video, just skip to 32:40 to see the Socom stuff: http://g4tv.com/videos/44675/GDC-2010-Sony-Playstation-GDC-Press-Event/

the motion control looks frakin sweet! ima jump on it and try it out for sure
